Should Children Have to Overcome Rain and Scorching Heat to Receive an Education?

They do in Gankahga village in Uganda, the inadequate number of classrooms force many children outside to study in the scorching heat and suffer constant interruptions during the rainy season.  “We need a classroom!” is the unison cry from the little kids standing under a shaky torn canopy.  Studying outdoors adds yet more challenges these already overburdened children face. The kids know what they want and the need is apparent in the pictures here.

The Gankanga school has grown from the community’s effort to provide education for their children, who previously had to walk miles crossing dangerous roads to get to school. Uganda Rural Fund (URF) is collaborating with the community to build permanent classroom structures, staff the school, and provide school supplies for the kids and teachers. The school currently has over 80 students from kindergarten to primary three and the demand is increasing.

We are raising funds to purchase bricks, corrugated iron sheets  for roofing, nails, doors, and windows, for three classroom blocks. This block will provide classroom space for kindergarten and primary kids who are currently congested in one shade which is already falling apart. Parents and community members have pledged other building materials and one member has donated the land for the school. In the meantime, Hope Academy students are helping put up temporary classroom structures for use until we get enough funds for permanent structures.  With your help we can empower these eager kids with an education that will greatly improve their lives.
