Piggery project empowering women and families in rural Uganda

“I have been able to use money from this project to make bricks that I hope to use in constructing my new house, paying workers, getting basic needs among other necessities for her family. Thanks very much to URF”…Nakanjako Mary

URF initiated a piggery project within the women empowerment program. This was done in order to provide women in this program a way of earning income to sustain their families. In this project, a woman is given a pig and once it gives birth, the piglets are given to other members in the program. The subsequent piglets she gets becomes hers together with the mother pig.

At present there are 53 women involved in this project and among these, Nabakooza Milly who has benefited so much in this project. With income from sale of piglets, she has been able to pay school fees for her children, buy clothing and afford medical care.

Another success story is Nakanjako Mary: “I have been able to use money from this project to make bricks that I hope to use in constructing my new house, paying workers, getting basic needs among other necessities for her family. Thanks very much to URF”

The Piggery Project has expanded to 12 villages. Currently, there is a total of 59 pigs circulating in different families.  This project is self-sustaining and has helped many families earn additional income. There would have been many more beneficiaries but some of the pigs get sick and die.
