Youth camp empowers 150 young leaders and entrepreneurs in rural Uganda

At the core of URF’s mission is a belief in the transforming power of education–education that is practical and oriented to the needs of the individuals we serve. During the weekend of January 10-12th, over 150 youth from Lwengo district and beyond gained practical skills in business management and leadership through the youth leadership camp. With such skills, URF empowers the rural youth to become innovative in addressing the crisis of poverty and become strong leaders championing development initiatives within their communities.

As part of the camp, the youth went on a tour to see mango plantations for a demonstration of best modern farming practices and they enjoyed learning about growing mangos and other fruits. Over 95% of the population URF serves is dependent on agriculture. It is important to designing our program in keeping with the nature of Uganda’s economy, helping people improve farming practices. Agriculture is the backbone of Uganda’s economy, especially for those in rural communities.

Local leaders, such as the Chairperson of Local Council 5, Mr. Mutabaazi George and others gave moving talks to the youth about community leadership, youth engagement, and development. These leadership figures act as role models and inspiration to the youth.

Other presentations on business skills were made by Ugandan young professionals, as well as students from the College of St. Benedict and St. John’s University in Minnesota. Thanks to the Minnesota students who sponsored this youth camp and ensured its great success.

One night involved a talent show conducted by the youth. It was an exciting night seeing so much talent demonstrated by the energetic youth. The youth camps are always an opportunity for social networking, building friendships, and collaboration.

At the end of the camp, the participants received certificate of participation.

Many thanks to URF staff and youth leaders who spent countless hours planning and making sure the weekend was fun and successful.
